About this piece
What it shows
Michael's name asks a question: “Who is like God?” He holds his sword and an unfurled scroll, a guardian rather than a warrior at rest. He is the protector of pilgrims, and the saint whose name we carry.
How it is made
The wings are built from layered ochres, the robe from rose and white, and the halo is laid in gold. The iconographer's signature appears at the foot of the panel.
